There’s a tank with water on top of my head. Every time I take a step forward, it moves. Backwards, it moves. To the side, it moves and I look up and see nothing. We could say it’s a vampire water tank, it doesn’t appear on the mirror either. However, I can still feel the weight on my neck and spine.
I sit down while I eat breakfast, and see a long list of accounts on Instagram that I don’t care about, showing a perfectly crafted picture to the world, with no traditionally negative emotions. Every picture is flattering, and a high school friend is in Paris. The bucket feels a little heavier now, and I stand up.
The water is cold as I wash the cup and soak the sponge in detergent, then grind against the bits and pieces of my breakfast in the plate. There is a woman, living somewhere else, speaking to me romantically, but we’re too far away. I mean, she’s introverted, granted, but I can tell that she treats people differently when she’s besides them, in person. And she’s sent a couple pictures too, I find her moderately pretty. But you gotta be realistic, I think, as the water moves above me in the bucket.
There’s a silent whistling noise for a bit, and the flame in the heater expands to a sizeable analog, now hot air finally licking my fingers slightly, before I start the computer up. I remember the name of my mentor, I can visualize his LinkedIn page and laugh internally at how empty it is. A guy with his experience doesn’t need to advertise himself; jobs come to him, and not the opposite. I admire him, maybe, while my spine curves itself a bit more under the increasing amount of water.
I walk to the curtains and open them up, letting some of the sun come through. Even in a windy day, it’s still welcome. How amazing it was when I lived in that other house, with a balcony, where it was just me and the world and the view of the city, and life was a little simpler. When I wasn’t working remotely as I am now, however, with all the bells and whistles that this job allows me. I could be commuting right this moment, but I’m doing photosynthesis instead. My eyes are closed, and the bucket feels a bit lighter.
